The Reality

Pool Drownings in Arizona, by the Numbers

#1

Drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 4 in the United States. About 380 children younger than 15 die in pool or spa drownings every year, and roughly 3 out of 4 are under age 5.

Sources: CDC, CPSC

Arizona's drowning rate for young children runs roughly double the national rate.

69%

Nearly 7 in 10 drownings of children age 4 and younger happen during non-swim times, when no one expected the child to be near the water.

Unknown

We get frequent calls from families who lost a pet to the pool, and you probably know at least one person who has faced that loss. Hard numbers are scarce because pet drownings so often go unreported.

A Real Barrier

A False Sense of Security Is the Most Dangerous Kind

A fence is only as safe as the last person to latch the gate, and it still leaves the whole pool open behind it. Nets and mesh covers keep a child out but sag into the water and leave the surface exposed. Each one asks you to trust a gap.

The PowerLock Solar Safety Cover closes the gap. It is a solid vinyl membrane locked down over the entire pool, not a screen and not a net. ASTM F1346-91, the U.S. standard for a pool safety barrier, requires a cover to hold 485 pounds. PowerLock greatly exceeds it. When your pool is filled to the proper level and the cover is properly secured, it supports the weight of an entire family.

Step onto it and the surface gives slightly, like a firm waterbed, with no opening for a child or a pet to slip through. That is the difference between hoping the water is out of reach and knowing it is sealed off.

What Actually Makes It Safe: How It Locks to Your Deck

The strength people can see comes from the vinyl. The safety comes from how it is held down. Dime-sized brass anchors are set flush into your deck about every 30 inches around the pool. They are what turn a strong cover into an impassable barrier.

Each anchor is two parts. The female half stays flush with the deck when the cover is off, so there is nothing to trip over and nothing to catch a bare foot. The male half is fixed to the cover and drops into it. We core-drill each one to protect your tile, travertine, and pavers.

Once every anchor is engaged, the cover and your deck become one continuous surface with the water sealed underneath. Every PowerLock also ships with a cover pump to clear standing water and a cordless removal drill, so the whole system stays easy to use and safe to trust.

How Pool Safety Options Actually Stack Up

Most safety products protect the pool one way and leave you paying for the water every other way. Here is the honest comparison.

  • Pool fence. A gate is only as safe as the last person who latched it, and the full pool sits open behind it.
  • Pool net. Keeps a child out, but sags into the water, still lets sun and debris in, and gives you nothing back on water, heat, or chemicals.
  • Mesh safety cover. Lets rain, sunlight, and fine debris pass straight through into the water below.
  • PowerLock Solar Safety Cover. Seals the entire pool, holds the weight of a family, anchors flush to your deck, and pays you back in water, heat, and chemicals. A true walk-on safety cover.

Use It Right

An Honest Word About Pool Safety

A safety cover is one of the strongest layers of protection you can add to a backyard pool. It is not a substitute for an adult watching the water, and we will never tell you it is. Use PowerLock the right way and it does its job every single time.

  • Never skip supervision. No cover, fence, or net removes the need to watch children and pets around water. PowerLock is a powerful extra layer, not a replacement for adult eyes.
  • Pump standing water off the cover. A child can drown in as little as one inch of water, so clear rain and sprinkler water promptly. Every PowerLock ships with a cover pump for exactly this.
  • Secure every anchor, every time. A partially anchored cover does not meet the ASTM safety standard. Lock all of them before you trust the surface.
  • Remove the cover completely before anyone swims. Never swim under a cover, and keep the removal tools out of reach of children.
Questions

Pool Safety FAQ

Is it really safe to walk on the cover?

Yes. When the pool is filled to the proper level and every anchor is secured, PowerLock supports the weight of an entire family. It greatly exceeds the 485-pound load in ASTM F1346-91, the U.S. pool safety barrier standard. The surface gives slightly, like a firm waterbed, with no gap for a child or pet to slip through.

Does PowerLock meet the ASTM safety standard?

It is built to exceed ASTM F1346-91, which requires a pool safety cover to hold 485 pounds. It only performs to that standard when it is fully anchored, so always lock down every anchor before anyone steps on it.

How is it different from a mesh safety cover or a pool net?

A net or mesh cover keeps a person out but sags into the water and lets rain, sunlight, and debris pass through. PowerLock is a solid vinyl cover that seals the whole pool, holds real weight, and anchors flush to your deck, so it protects the pool and pays you back on water, heat, and chemicals at the same time.

Is it safe for pets?

Yes. The same anchored barrier that keeps children off the water keeps dogs and other animals from falling in. Owners with aging or curious pets often tell us it is the reason they finally stopped worrying about the backyard.

Does a safety cover replace adult supervision?

No, and we will never tell you otherwise. No cover, fence, or net removes the need to watch children and pets around water. PowerLock is a strong extra layer of protection, not a substitute for supervision.

What about water sitting on top of the cover?

Pump it off. Standing water is a hazard on any cover, and a child can drown in as little as one inch, so clear rain and sprinkler water promptly. Every PowerLock includes a cover pump, with automatic pump options available.
